One more note for Japan: do NOT add anything to your tea before you taste it. This is considered EXTREMELY rude.

In general, this is a good idea when being served quality tea anyway - while a lot of us in America are used to Lipton’s black tea, which is blended to taste the same every time, good tea is like wine and tastes different depending on a variety of factors. If you drown good tea in milk, ESPECIALLY tea from a single estate, you’re missing out.
